Join the global community providing 626,864 people with clean water

When you give to IDRF, your dollars go towards funding various water solutions in rural communities. We make use of the latest technologies to bring water to areas that need it most. Our mission is to make sure that everyone has access to clean water. But we need our monthly giving community.

Water scarcity disproportionally burdens women, who tirelessly fetch unsafe water from distant sources. With your support for our locally-led projects, partners rehabilitate old systems, build new ones, and provide vital hygiene training, making clean water easily accessible and transforming lives for the better.

Water shouldn’t be this complicated

In countless communities, women bear the brunt of water scarcity, fetching water from afar. By backing our locally-led initiatives, you help revive old systems, establish new ones, and educate on hygiene, ensuring clean water becomes a reality, empowering lives, and simplifying a fundamental necessity.

Clean water is more than a basic necessity–it is a lifeline for the communities we serve. Your support enables families to access safe water for drinking and cooking, protecting them from water borne diseases and fostering a healthier environment for growth and prosperity.

IDRF’s Clean Water and Sanitation programs address the specific needs of each community.

At IDRF, our WASH programs provide clean water and education on wastewater management and hygiene practices, to improve quality of life. This in turn, has positive outcomes in overall health, life expectancy, and gender equality.

Traditional Water Wells

Traditional water wells can be either gasoline-powered or manual depending on the region, providing water to entire communities.

Solar Water Wells

The power of the sun powers the engines to pump water through hoses.

Trucking

Water is tested by credible and authorized water supply plants in the community. The water trucks are filled and driven daily to designated locations to provide communities with fresh, clean water.

Hygiene Kits

Each kit contains essential hygiene items such as sanitary pads, underwear, soap, toothbrushes, and toothpaste. The kits support the needs of individuals in communities that lack these essential items.

Hygiene and Sanitation Education

All of our WASH projects teach individuals how to safely practice hygiene and sanitation to promote their health and wellbeing.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does IDRF utilize my $40 water donation?

Through a donation of $40, you are helping people from around the world (Yemen, Somalia, Gaza, Kenya, Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger, Pakistan, Afghanistan and Syria) have access to clean drinking water that they can use to cook a meal or quench their thirst. How our dedicated partners implement this varies depending on the region; in some parts of the world, such as in South Asia, we’ve established rainwater harvesting programs; Across Africa, we’ve built deep boreholes and handpumps to provide clean water to entire villages; in parts of the Middle East, we deliver clean water through trucks.

We’ve also established water networks to support thousands of families to ensure they meet their dietary needs while maintaining our recipient’s privacy and dignity.

What kind of clean water technologies does IDRF implement around the world?

IDRF implements several types of water technology programs and continues to build on its clean water offerings around the world. The technologies include:

  • Rainwater harvesting
  • Boreholes
  • Shallow water wells – using handpumps
  • Deep water wells – using generators and motors
  • Solar Water wells
  • SCADA water systems
  • Water trucking
  • Latrines
  • Clean water piping to households
  • Point of use water purification systems
  • Water filtration units

Can I choose which water technology my donation goes towards?

Our team works closely with our partners on the ground to determine the water technology best suited for the culture, climate, geography and cost in each area where we work. Instead of choosing the technology, country, or local partner yourself, we ask that you trust our judgment in determining where your funds go. We are honoured to have the chance to be good stewards of your fundraising efforts – and we take it very seriously.

How do you choose which local partner to use?

Our team has been working through a localized model for 40 years. We have a strong network of local partners worldwide with expertise in clean water solutions. These are partnerships that IDRF is proud of and hopes to build on over the years to come.

Can you build a water project in a specific region, country or community of my choosing?

Our team can’t accommodate donor requests to work in specific regions, countries or communities. We are honoured to have the chance to be good stewards of your fundraising efforts – and we take it very seriously. This is why we pick regions in which we assess and feel we can fulfill clean water projects.

Can I go to the field with IDRF to visit the water projects?

We work closely with local partners on the ground who coordinate and implement all of our water projects. The sites they work on are live construction sites, and they often employ locals from the community to help implement the projects. Because of this, we don’t coordinate or have volunteer opportunities abroad. However, we will always share updates from our water projects via our social media and annual Water Sanitation and Hygiene Report.

Can I get an inscription on a water well?

At this time, IDRF does not offer inscriptions on water wells. At the same time, we understand the importance of having a family displayed on a well; however, IDRF builds wells in remote and sometimes conflicted regions, making building a well and placing plaques on wells very challenging. To ensure we remain transparent and efficient with donations from our donors, we are not offering water well inscriptions now. However, our team will provide anyone who has donated to our water well program with a full report highlighting your worldwide impact.

How long do your water projects take?

Each water project varies depending on the region and the technology being used. For instance, digging a shallow well may take several months; however, implementing large-scale water systems and installing piping in homes may take close to 24 months. At IDRF, we are committed to implementing the best water solution, so it may take time to achieve our goals. However, we aim to do the job right and leave a lasting impact on the communities we serve.
